What it is

The HxC is a device which is capable of emulating the floppy drive of many vintage computers and electronic musical instruments. It has been designed by the HxC2001 project, which is initiated and lead by Jean-Francois Del Nero.

There are two types of HxC available:

  • SD HxC, which uses an SD memory card to store "virtual floppy disks"
  • USB HxC, which requires a USB connection to a computer to access the "virtual floppy disks" stored on the computer.

The SD HxC is by far the most popular choice. It's available as an internal or as an external device.

The HxC supports the E-Mu Emulator-I and Emulator-II samplers since the end of 2010.

The EMAX-I and EMAX-II are also supported, and the HxC seems to work pretty fine in the Emulator-III and Emulator-IIIX as well.

In order to use the HxC, the original floppy drive must be replaced by the HxC. This means that the floppy drive's power and data cables in the sampler should be connected to the HxC instead of to the original floppy drive.

On this page you can download:

  • An installation and user manual specifically written for installing and using the SD HxC in the E-Mu Emulator-I and Emulator-II. Various configurations are explained.
  • Bootable Emulator-I, Emulator-II, Emulator-III and Emulator-IIIX disk images. The Emulator-II disk images can also be used as "OS Overlay Files" for the HxC windows software.

Downloads

We have written a manual specifically dedicated to the installation and usage of the SD HxC in the E-Mu Emulator-I and Emulator-II samplers. It includes many drawings and practical hints. Although the manual hasn't recently been updated while some new models of the HxC device have been launched in the meanwhile, the information in the manual is still valid, even for the newer models.

This manual can be downloaded here:

Some Emulator I bootable disk files for use with the HxC can be downloaded here.

The .HFE files can immediately be used on the SD card; the .EMUFD files can be used as input file for the HxC conversion software.
